WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS
Every mentoring program reaches the same crossroads eventually.
The more people you bring in, the harder it gets to deliver the thing that made it worth joining: the sense that matches are intentional, a real community is behind the program, and real human connections are being made.
Most programs handle this one of two ways. They stay small and personal, but cap their own impact. Or they scale, and quietly accept that the program gets a little more transactional and less intentional in the process.
StartOut found a third path and what they built is worth studying, whatever kind of mentoring program you run.
As a nonprofit for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, the human dimension of their program is the whole point. So when their interest grew and manual matching hit a wall, letting the program get cold wasn’t an option. They acted and went from 60-day match times to same-day without losing the authenticity that makes it work.
In this live session, Allison Wright joins Mentorloop’s Kristin Nankervis to talk about what that actually required.
Seven years of manual matching worked until it didn’t. Allison takes us inside what was no longer working and what had to change.
For LGBTQ+ founders, mentoring isn’t just professional development. It’s connection and feeling seen. We’ll get into how StartOut kept the human dimension into their program as a design principle.
Most programs plateau. StartOut’s keeps improving: in quality, in impact, and in what it makes possible for the community.
Allison talks through the decisions behind that and what a genuinely self-sustaining program looks like in practice.
The lessons from StartOut’s program are universal. How do you keep relationships feeling real at volume? How do you scale the admin without making it feel transactional? We’ll talk about some practical strategies and tactics for anyone running a mentoring program.
