Renée's Mentoring Story

Mentoring and coaching have always been integral to how I live, lead, and teach.
At 23, in my first corporate role, I had a coach and mentor and was taught the value of coaching and mentoring, which shaped my approach ever since. Now, as the founder of a business focused on growing others, mentoring remains one of my core pillars. I also practice what I preach, working with my own coach and mentor, who continue to shape my journey and evolution.
Mentoring is about guiding and supporting others on their journey, sharing experiences, knowledge, and skills, and creating a space for mutual growth. I believe both mentors and mentees learn from one another in a collaborative and enriching exchange. The best mentors I’ve had have been deep listeners, skilful guides, and invaluable sounding boards.
Two mentors stand out in my life. My first mentor was my Grade 4 English teacher, who nurtured my love of writing by encouraging me to create mini books and providing feedback that inspired my development as a writer.
Later, during my 12 years at MARS, I was fortunate to work with Sue Kelly, an amazing leader who guided me while I headed the new business channel. In a male-dominated environment, she was a strong and supportive mentor who challenged me to grow, encouraged me to focus on my strengths, and reminded me to stop and celebrate moments of success. Though she has passed away, her guidance continues to resonate with me, particularly during challenging times.
Mentors come in many forms, and the best ones’ challenge, inspire, and guide us to the outcomes we seek. Their influence leaves a lasting impact, shaping who we are and who we aspire to become.
