Today, we chat with Freddie – a Deck Cadet in the LegaSea Mentoring Program.
Going into the program Freddie, what did you hope to get out of it? Are you on track to accomplish your goals?
I hoped to meet amazing people and connect with our common interests. I also wanted to develop personally, in regard to management, leadership, mindfulness and asset management.
I am very on top of my goals at the moment, learning from everyone I speak to. I even have an ever-growing reading list!
What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?
I think the ‘secret’ would be researching your mentor beforehand to learn some more about their values. Also offering anything you can to give something back to your mentor ‘paying it forward’ to ensure a two way relationship. I also think being comfortable with your mentor is important!
What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match!
I think mentoring has opened my eyes to the vast experience from different people, especially people I wouldn’t necessarily have the pleasure of getting to know. My mentorship has allowed me to reflect on previous experiences and analyse them, taking the good and bad, helping me to shape myself into the best version of me!
And lastly, what tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
Keep in touch with your mentors! It is a two-way street! Be accountable and do the things you say you will, it will only help. Sign up for everything you can, I have learnt so so much.
