Meet Stephen Bayam – a VP-Client Account Expert for Swiss Re America Corp and a participating mentor in the Involve Blue 21 mentoring program. We asked Stephen about what he considers to be the “secret” to a good relationship with your mentoring partner and he offers advice for those who are new to the world of mentoring.
What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!
Starting with an overview of your background. A willingness to listen well, ask questions, and resisting the tendency to offer solutions unless directly requested. We tend to think we can help when sometimes simply a listening ear is needed.
What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life?
Has made me realise that one size doesn’t fit all and recognising how different my life could have been if this resource was available when I started my career.
What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
Always be a good listener first and foremost. Focus is important. Treat each discussion with blinders on – do not multitask! Recognise these sessions as mutually beneficial as they will help you personally and professionally. Lastly, do not dominate the discussion – it’s about them, not you.
