Meet Ayman Kaouri – Commercial Lead for the UK & EMEA and a mentor in the Xero Mentoring Program. Ayman shares his thoughts on the secret to a good mentoring relationship and what he thinks mentors get out of a mentoring relationship.

What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?
As a mentor, it’s important to always be flexible, supportive, and understanding. It may be that your mentees haven’t made the progress they would have liked to in between your meetings. Reassuring them that this is OK and making sure they know that they continue to see the positives can help them remain motivated to develop themselves further.
What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match?
It’s very rewarding to feel like you’re making a difference in someone else’s professional development. It’s easy to get caught up in your own work but having the opportunity to help someone else develop has given me the feeling that I’m giving something back and hopefully having a positive impact on someone else’s life.
What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
Don’t think twice, just do it. You may think that your mentees will be the only beneficiaries of the relationship but the reality is you often remind yourself of things that you ought to be doing yourself and you, therefore, end up re-establishing positive habits.
