2 Minutes with a Mentee: Meet Ryan Tessier

Meet Ryan Tessier - a Product Designer at REA Group and a participating mentee in the REA Mentoring Program

Meet Ryan Tessier – a Product Designer at REA Group and a participating mentee in the REA Mentoring Program. Ryan shares the difference mentoring has made in his life and some solid advice for those who are thinking of entering into a mentoring relationship as a mentee.

What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!

I think if there’s anything that doesn’t get discussed enough about successful mentoring relationships, it’s that the burden is on the mentee to figure out what they want from a mentor.

What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match!

I’ve made a career change from a development role into product design, which isn’t super common. It’s been hard to navigate without formal processes or past examples. Having (my mentor) to answer questions and support me in my plans has helped me feel I am not on this journey alone.

What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?

Make sure you find a mentor you can relate with and look up to. Don’t be afraid to meet and learn more about them before you formalise a mentoring relationship.

The REA Mentoring Program was introduced as a tool to enhance learning & skills development opportunities. The program hopes to create a culture of knowledge sharing, with a focus on cross-community connections, as well as increase opportunities for participants to progress laterally and upskill.
