2 Minutes with a Mentee: Meet Emma Sutton

Meet Emma Sutton – a 4th-year medical student, Founder and President of Med Mentors Australia and a participating mentee in the Dr JuMP Mentoring Program. Emma shared with us why she’s had an amazing time being part of her mentoring program, the value of having a mentor in her path to applying for a rural generalist internship, and her advice for those who may be intimidated by the thought of entering into a mentoring relationship.

What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!

I have been part of so many mentorships and as the mentee, it is hard to set expectations for the relationship or even know what to ask. It’s been fantastic working with a mentor who immediately set us a timetable for our meetings and at the end of each meeting sets a goal and homework for the next meeting. Absolutely phenomenal experience so far!

What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match!

I was able to apply for a rural generalist internship pathway with so much more confidence that rural medicine is the right fit for me after having so many inspiring conversations with a rural generalist!

What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, it’s helpful for mentors and mentees to organise meeting times well in advance and set a goal or a topic for each meeting to take any confusion or miscommunication out of the scenario. I feel like my mentorship has turned into a friendship which is definitely a sign of good mentoring, I think! Don’t be scared of your mentor, think of them as a generous peer! Good luck!
