This week we met with Amber Stocker, a mentee in the WIMWA Mentoring Programme and Asset Coordinator at Thiess. Her role is very diverse and involves end-to-end procurement of mobile assets, tender resourcing, driving cost-saving initiatives, ensuring assets are compliant with site requirements and being the ‘middle woman’ between suppliers and sites. We sat down to learn more about her mentoring experience:
What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?
The secret is to get to know each other, find common interests, be honest and open. During the meetings we learned we both share a great passion for outdoors and environmental (especially marine) issues, enjoy classical music concerts and are very family-oriented. Our catch up locations varied from a sushi train (we discovered we both like sushi and Thai food) to having a tour at Epiroc (I was so excited to see different drill rigs!). Becoming familiar with each other’s hobbies and personal lives made it easier to discuss work / career-related issues and ask difficult questions.
What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match!
My mentor encouraged me to find some time for myself – I’ve started running a few times a week and joined Toastmasters club.
Lastly – what tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
Go with an open mind, attend networking events and try your absolute best to utilise this opportunity to the maximum!
