Meet Sue Murthy – Enterprise Account Manager at HP and a participating mentee for HP’s Power Up Mentoring Program. We asked Sue to share what her goals were when she joined this mentoring program, what the experience has taught her, and what tips she has for those who are new to mentoring. Here’s what she had to say:
Going into the program, what did you hope to get out of it?
I joined this program to expand my passions and not only develop my knowledge base, but learn and pick up skills that I admire in my mentor. I do believe this has been achieved but it is a journey that will continue to evolve.
What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!
The ability to have open lines of communication. To have a relationship with my mentor whereby I am able to speak about my strengths, challenges and focus on areas of development. To feel extremely comfortable speaking without feeling vulnerable or inadequate.
What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life?
Mentoring has given me the opportunity to be myself and realise where my areas of improvement are. I have learnt that I can be who I set out to be and there are no boundaries. I am in control of my successes and my mentor has helped me to achieve and continue to achieve. This is not the end of our journey!
What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
The relationship needs to be right for you as a team. Like minded people will be able to achieve their goals at a faster pace. Enjoying each other’s company in this journey of growth is so important to achieving the effective results.
The HP Power Up Mentoring Program aims to enhance learning & skills development opportunities, while encouraging connections across locations and departments. The goal is to create a culture of knowledge sharing and connectedness.
