2 Minutes with a Mentee: Meet Danielle

Danielle - a mentee in the IPAA Victoria Peer Plus Mentoring Program

Meet Danielle – a participating mentee in the IPAA Victoria Peer Plus Mentoring Program.

Danielle shared with us what she thinks makes a mentoring relationship successful, how she has benefitted from being in a mentoring program, and her tips for those who are hoping to make the most out of their mentoring experience.

What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!
The ‘secret’ to a good mentoring relationship is to be honest and open, speak and listen with intentionality and follow through on agreed tasks (e.g. preparing material for the next meeting). My mentor and I really liked the John Crosby quote from our first workshop which stated that “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction”. I think this quote sums up the ‘secret’ perfectly!

What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life?
Mentoring has enhanced my professional life by instilling a sense of reassurance that I am taking the right steps in my early career development. My mentor has supported me in developing greater self-confidence in communicating with more senior members of my organisation.

What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?
I would advise people to be open and honest so that you can really make the most of your mentoring partnership, especially given that we are all busy professionals and dedicate time to the program. Having this mindset will allow you to confidently identify and work on your strengths and improve the areas that need further development. A final tip I would offer is to express gratitude. Fantastic mentors are hard to come by, so if you are lucky enough to be partnered with a great mentor like I have, it is imperative to express your appreciation.

The IPAA Victoria Peer Plus Mentoring Program was introduced to develop the capability of mentees in the early stages of their public sector career, by building relationships with experienced peers. The goal is to foster a culture of knowledge exchange and  connectedness.
