Meet Andrew Gardiner – Project Officer and VP Graduate at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and a participating mentee in the DELWP mentoring program. We asked Andrew about his hopes going into mentoring and how it has changed his life. Here’s what he had to say.

Going into the program, what did you hope to get out of it? Are you on track to accomplish your goals?

Going into the program I hoped to help create a valuable mentorship that would support my personal development and growth while receiving valuable advice from a more experienced person. I saw this as an opportunity to expand my network and further enhance in involvement within the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

I feel that the experience this program has given me has put me on the right track to accomplish my goals and continue my personal growth.

What do you think the ‘secret’ is to a good mentoring relationship?!

I feel that the secret to a good mentoring relationship is a mutual commitment to personal development. This program is an opportunity for both mentee and mentor to grow within their roles and support each other’s career progression.

What is one way that mentoring has changed your professional or personal life – or for your mentoring match!

Mentoring has changed my professional life by supporting my career growth through sharing advice and personal feedback with my mentor. This advice continues to motivate me to build connections within my department and expose myself to new experiences!

What tips or advice would you like to share with those new to mentoring?

My advice is to be open to feedback within a mentoring relationship and use this experience as an opportunity to promote your personal development and build new connections within your role.
